Qld; New park will be the lungs of Brisbane, says Beattie

BRISBANE, April 6 AAP - Brisbane's New Roma street Parkland will provide new "lungs"

for the city, Premier Peter Beattie said today.

He will officially open the new $72-million park this morning on what was once a disused
rail yard on the edge of Brisbane's central business district.

Mr Beattie said the area was once "a mess" but now included 100,000 shrubs, 1,200 mature
trees, 350 palms and a one hectare lake.

"This is the largest sub-tropical garden in an inner city in the world," Mr Beattie
told Channel Seven's "Sunrise" program today.

He said the park had given Brisbane a new heart and lungs and would become a tourist
attraction for the city.

There will be a free public concert in the park tonight.
