FED: Telstra rejects silent number mistake report

The New South Wales Council of Civil Liberties says if claims Telstra published hundredsof silent numbers in the White Pages are correct it's an irreparable breach of privacy.

Council president CAMERON MURPHY says Telstra's failure to protect people's personalinformation is disgraceful.

He says excuses by Telstra that human error is unavoidable isn't a sufficient excuse.

A report in the Daily Telegraph says a mistake in Telstra's data entry systems hasresulted in the numbers appearing in the on-line and hard copy versions of this year'sWhite pages telephone directory throughout Australia.

But Telstra spokesman MICHAEL HERSKOPE says the telco's checks are in place to ensurecustomers' initial instructions are followed.

He says while there might be a risk of a mistake, the chance of an error is one-in-1,000.

He says customers who have been the victim of an error are urged to contact the companyto have the situation rectified.
